Missed it by that much....

Was watching Trucks this last Saturday and Kevin was doing a sliver blend job on the Silverado project.
He was using PPG though and as Keith posted DBC 500.
1 coat of 500,straight base, then he reduced the base 50% with 500 for each successive coat AND,
Did the outside-in technique. Also was using an Iwata LPH-400 LVX.

I usually miss it but lately it's actually been worth watching.
I don't always agree with their "procedures" but this was a 1st class how to.
But of course,It ALWAYS looks easy on TV.
You might send MARTINSR a PM on the Chevy board about "what" he would recomend for blending the C/F.
He's fairly up on the s-w stuff and if nothing else,I'd get some binder and reduce it 1:1 and use it like the 500
Basically the same thing. I'm just afraid anything else won't be compatiable with the C/F,It's some "different" stuff for sure.

That's a good idea to PM him, I hadn't thought about that. I was thinking the same thing on the binder. I'm nervous about it though, because about a year ago my paint guy made me a mid coat out of pearls and binder for Crossfire, (kinda like the one I used on the Harley tank with ghost flames), and if I laid it on wet, the midcoat would literally crack as it dried, kinda like crowfeet. It doesn't make much sense why it does it, but I tried it again on a test panel when I painted the Harley tank, and it did it again.

That sounds like it was over reduced or the binder was done wrong.
I had a simular experience with some inter coat I went with 1:3 on with some KK's and after a few days,it looked like cracked ice.Actually was a cool effect but not exactly what I was wanting.
I should have cleared it sooner but was one of those projects that was a "whenever" deal and left it in IC too long and with it being "cut" so much, dried and shrunk.
good thing was, when I did clear it,they vanished.

I don't know much about mixing paint, how can binder be done wrong? I think I'm going to try a mixture of straight binder 50/50 with slow reducer, then 50/50 with ready to spray color for a blend. Is that what yall were suggesting? I asked MARTINSR about blending Crossfire and he didn't know much about it either. He thought the reason that the midcoat cracked was because the base dried on top, but not undernieth, forming a "shell" that cracked when the midcoat was applied. He said to try spraying the midcoat sooner, before the base dried too much, or later, after it dried all the way through, on a test panel. BTW, Crossfire base is pretty thick for basecoat. I'd say between base and enamel in thickness. It mixes 2:1 with reducer, which is probably why it covers pretty well.
