HuggerCST's build

Postby HuggerCST on Fri Jan 11, 2008 9:47 pm

I know that most have you have seen it before, but I thought that I would put a build thread together that tells a little more background. I bought this truck in June of '99 (I've had it longer than I thought). I wasn't in the market for one, but it popped up in the local paper for $3500, and I had never even seen a CST around here, much less one that I could afford, so I had to go look. My first truck was a '63 chevy, and I was always a old Chevy fan. When I was a kid growing up, my Dad drove a '70 short wide as his company truck, and I got to drive it around the farm alot, so that's probably why I like this body style so much. Anyway, I went to look at it, drove it, etc. It was in descent shape with the usual rusty cab corners and rockers, and the engine had a dead miss, but I liked it alot, so I talked him down to $3000 and bought it. I got it home and tried to tune it up, but the dead cylinder had no compression(valve), and it drove my crazy, so I had to tear into it. My plan was to rebuild the engine, fix the rust, repaint it, and drive it. That plan didn't last long.

I tore it down and one thing led to another. The original engine was in great shape other than the heads. My brother in law owned a machine shop, so he helped me rework the engine. He bored it .020, turned the crank .010, and kept it original other than an RV cam. Since most everything was still there and so original under the hood, I decided to keep everything that way, other than HEI. I figured that I could always add some goodies later. I didn't go into detail on the frame and suspension, because I knew that it wouldn't stay that way if I drove it much, and I have a long dirt driveway. I cleaned it up, reworked the brakes, and repainted it. I also replaced the rockers and cab corners, then painted the cab inside and out.

It has sat in the garage most of these years while I collected parts. I have collected and added original style bucket seats, console, tilt, am/fm, speedwarning, cruise, tach, posi, wood bed floor, and 95% of all the new parts that I need to finish it. Last year I had the bed and hood soda blasted and got it all in primer. I got a crazy idea to put the fuel tank in the rear and hide the fuel filler behind the tail light. Once I finished that, I assembled the bed and parked it again. I pulled it back into the shop in december and am currently trying to finish up the bed and get the inside painted. I also blasted my wheels and plan to paint them in the next couple of days. I have the front fenders and tailgate being blasted now, just waiting for them to get done so I can straighten them. I plan to go with 6 lug rallies for now, but will probably change everything to 5 lug with disc brakes when I can afford some wheels.

Wynne,

It's great to see you working on it again. It's going to be great finished. You are in about the same boat as me. I have all the parts, I just need to contribute the labor and finish it. Keep at it man it's looking good.

Looks like it was a pretty good truck to start with, you're just making it better. Now get to work, and finish it! I know, I know... I'm going slower than you.

Just got off the phone with Mark(Fuelcellguy). My cell is now ordered! Those things are high, but they are nice! I don't have any new pics yet, but I'm working on it. I decided to go with Ospho between the bedside walls. I kept everything that I didn't want coated flushed with water, and haven't had any problems so far, but I've still got my fingers crossed. I plan to put some undercoat in there also, for some added protection on those hard to reach areas that are prone to rust. I got my wheels and the inside of the bed painted too.(Gotta love new paint) Am I nuts to buff it? I'm almost ready for the wood, which is ready to be installed, but I may finish the other bodywork first. Thanks for the comments guys.

Yeah you could make one, Eric. People have asked me to make them one, but I just winged it, making it fit as I went along, so it's hard to duplicate. The side marker filler would have been easier, but I just wanted to be different. I always liked subtle mods like that.

Is it possible to go too far? I don't think so.

When I finally get around to doing the Blazer it will definately need one of those tail light fills too, it won't have side-markers.
