Driving Directions Advice

Postby Palf70Step on Tue Oct 27, 2009 9:51 pm

I'm making a trip to Kansas in about two weeks and looking at suggestion on trip routes.

My original Idea was to take I55 up to St Louis, the snag 70 over to the town (Hays, KS) where my daughter will be living.

Another thought was Go up to Jackson, MS catch 20 over to Dallas then 35 up thru Wichita Falls to 70.

One of the recommend routes is I10 to Lafayette up to Alexandria, then 20 to Dallas, then up.

I am trying to keep on main Interstates with the U-haul and trailer hauling the car.

I always hated that leg between Lafayette/Alexandria, it was always torn up.

All work out to be about the same mileage

I'll be driving back in a rental. So any suggestions from you long haul folks?

I-49 between Alexandria and Lafayette is good now. No construction that I'm aware of.

Bill,

If you take I-10 don't go to Lafayette, when you cross the bridge at Baton Rouge cut over to 190 and go to Opelousas and get on I-49 north, it'll shave off many miles, it's 4 lane (65 mph most of the way) but there are red lights on 190, however it moves fast. Same as Keith said I-49 is good all the way to Shreveport, no construction. 190 has about a half mile of construction at the hwy 71 intersection but you don't have to stop.

you'll come within a couple miles of my house when you are at the Natchitoches exit. If I were at home you could stop for a cup of coffee. I won't be home until Nov 18th.

I'm near Ruston, (north central La.) near I-20, and the quickest and easiest way for me to get to Gulfport is to go through Jackson/Hattiesburg, but that may not be the same for you since you are going to Shreveport. I think it's almost an hour quicker going through Jackson. Of course getting around Dallas is always a pain and will take some time, especially if you hit it at the wrong time of day. I always take the 635 loop around.

I think you are right Wynne. You know Mike in Shreveport always goes to Covington to see his daughter through Jackson, it'll probably be faster. It doesn't work for me coming from Natchitoches.

Thats the route we took when we went to Ruston for the Peach Festival. We went up to Jackson, then across. I think it took us about 4 1/2 hours that route from Folsom to Ruston.

It had been years since I took I 49 north out of Lafayette but it was a real nice smooth ride when I went this weekend. Took me 4 hrs. from Folsom to Natchitoches. I also saw ALOT of State Troopers throught that stretch, more than I usually see anywhere.
