Wiper motor question.

Postby GHBLUEHAZE67 on Fri Apr 17, 2009 5:05 pm

I want to replace my one speed wiper motor with a two speed. Can I get a wiring harness for just the wiper motor?
I have 3 dash harnesses but all have the 2-prong wiper motor connector. Any ideas?

Greg,

I think you can pull this off without having to change the entire harness but I don't think you will find a seperate harness just for the wipers unless someone knows of a kit that I don't. I think if you get a 2 speed switch and motor you could build a harness and even better if you can get hold of the wiring out of a truck that has a 2 speed wiper you could cut out that part out of the harness and make it work because there should be only one hot wire to the switch and everything else feeds off it. I bet Wynne or myself could get what you need out of one our parts trucks so let us know. I'll study the wiring diagram to be sure and let you know.

Greg.

I did some digging in the shop and in my books. On the 71/72's there is a yellow wire feeding the wiper switch from the fuse box. The 2 speed wiring comes off the switch, it's more or less a seperate harness. I have a couple of old harnesses and removed what you need out of it. You could connect your power wire to this harness and it will work. I have an old 2 speed motor, switch and the harness if you want it, I have not tested it and I'm sure the washer pump would need a rebuild. You can have it, it's just gathering dust. I come to Shreveport every now then, just let me know and we'll try and get together if you want it. If not I can draw out a diagram on how to wire it, just let me know.

I didn't even realize that 67s only had one speed. I thought they were the same 67-72. I don't know what year they changed, but I know that I have a nice complete 69 cab harness if you need it Greg.

I didnt know that either. Are the 68's one speed too? I was in high school when I had my 68 and my 70 but dont remember what the wiper speeds were. I was going to put a new harness in, I may have to find another motor too. I just assumed they were all the same.

Your right Eric, he is isnt he! :D I think someone find it real hard to ask a question or need a part for any classic truck that a member here didnt know the answer or have the part for!

Thanks Guys.

I always thought they were all 2 speed by 67 as well because I know 2 speed wipers were available in 66 and I can't ever recall seeing a 66 without 2 speed wipers and a washer pump. Greg's truck blows that theory out the window. I know 65's didn't have them so it must have been an option from 66 until ??? I know at some point they made it standard and with washers. Kevin added the 2 speed wipers/ washers to the Hooptie out of a 66.

Mike, Yes, Thank you. No big hurry but just let me know when you're going to be in the area. Also I will let you know if I am going to be down your way. I have a 2-speed motor out of a 72 that is in good working order. My old motor worked, but it only operated at one speed - very slow. It is definitely different at the connector than the the one I am replacing. My old motor and my harness have matching 2-prong connectors, the motor out of the 72 has three prongs but I don't have the harness. Does your's have the three prong connector? If so, I only need the harness and switch.

Thanks again and hope to see you soon.

P.S.
I don't know how reliable their information is but LMC lists three different motors for these trucks: a one speed w/2 terminals for 67-68, a two speed with three terminals for 67-72, and a two speed with four terminals for 67-72.

Greg,

The one I have has a plug with 2 terminals and a single terminal so it would be a 3 terminal motor, then it has 2 terminals for the washer pump,
