New paint gun

Postby HuggerCST on Tue Jul 28, 2009 9:24 am

I picked up a almost new gun the other day and have some questions for you paint pros. I know it's not the best of the best gun, but it was dirt cheap ($200 which included a box full of air tools, sanders, etc.) and appears to be a decent gun. No, this stuff isn't hot, lol, a local painter is getting out of the business. It's a Sharpe "Razor" with a 1.4 tip. Apparently he used it for clear only. Anyway, it's a HVLP, and I've never owned one, or sprayed with one. I can't see anything different about it, but does it have to be "set up", or changed to be used as a HVLP? How should I treat it differently than my old gun? Also, I see that different air caps are offered for it, including a air cap for metallics. I'd like to try that one, but is it worth $90 bucks?
I just missed buying a nearly new Sata mini gravity feed for $100.

That's kinda what I was thinking on the pressure. I usually like a little lower pressure anyway. I've never changed the air cap for metalics either, but I saw that one is offered and wondered if it would help with mottling, or metalic "tiger stripes". It's supposed to break up the metalic better, but if that's the case, why couldn't you use it with a solid color as well? I may just have to buy it and see...

In my experience Wynne, The only difference, like Eric said is lower air pressure (about 30 PSI + or - a few pounds to suit your spraying style). It sets up and pretty much sprays just like a conventional gravity feed gun.
I've never changed air caps for metallics either, don't know if it's worth the $90 bucks.
Never seen a Sharpe "Razor". It looks well cared for.
Too bad that you missed the Sata, very sweet spray guns.
