What V-8 Engine can fit a 1960 Chevy?

Postby jbgroby on Tue Sep 01, 2009 9:24 pm

My friend Justin Newbury has a 1960 Chevy with a 235 S-6, becasue the engine blew a head gasket and upon inspection of the piston show them to be 0.060 over already, he felt it would be worth changing to a V-8.

He had a 283 and a source for a 396 big block, but have heard that headers ae hard to fit in, but is unsure what would fit the frame of his truck.

Can anyone with exp. please drop a note to the BB and give me some giudance for him to go by?

He CPU is dead and it would be a while before he can get on the net, so he asked me to see what info I can find for him.

Thanks
Jake

I'm not real familiar with a '60, but I had a '63, and a 283, or any small block chevy would bolt right in it. I feel sure that the big block will too with minor mods and the right motor mounts.

By the way, I assume that the other thread was posted in General discussion by mistake, so I deleted it.

I'm not real familiar with the 60-62 trucks either, But the only problem that I can see and it may not be a problem at all is that 60-62 chevy trucks ran the torsion bar front suspension and the frames are wider apart than the 63-66 trucks. So I guess what I'm saying is I don't know if a BB motor mount for a 68-71 will work or not because of the frame width. Jeremy is running a small block in his 62 4x4 so maybe there is no problem. Might be something to look into.

Jake, i had a 283 in my 62 2 wd. You just have to get the right motor mounts. I've seen bb in 60-62s also, you just have to move the motor up a couple inches to have clearance for the dizzy. Header wise im not sure but i hear that they are tight. The block hugger headers should work.
