Eric,
I don't know what it's worth, has he set a price? It's probably worth a lot more than I told you because you are getting a lot for your money. It would probably cost a couple of grand or more to build it seeing how it's so complete. The plugs slant toward the exhaust valve, both heads are identical and swap side to side. Something to do with quench or something another I guess. 90% it's a 454, there aren't many 427's or 396's floating around anymore and 454's are pretty common. It sounds like he upgraded quite a bit. Stock lo po 454's from that era had 5/16" pushrods and you said he put the bigger ones in. 396's, 402's and 427's usually had 3/8" and higher perf versions had 7/16".It's pretty common to upgrade a low performance 454 with 3/8" pushrods because any kind of added spring pressure (or big cam) will fold those 5/16" pushrods up. Ask me how I know. Of course he could have added 7/16" pushrods as well but they are big bucks and they only came in real high perf big blocks. Gotta have the correct guide plates for the pushrods. I have 3/8" in mine. If it has flat tops it will be real low compresion, probably around 8 to 8.5:1 or so with a set of 049's or 781's. It will run on regular unleaded and be a good street motor. Try to find out if it has cast, forged or hypertutectic (sp?) pistons. This really raises the price depending on which ones it has. Too bad you can't pull a valve cover. The later model peanut ports are crap and run out of wind real quick. They do make great bottom end torque but wheeze out over about 3500 rpm.

Keith Blacks are good but are they cast, forged or what? Price goes from cast-cheap, ,,,,Hypertutectic- a little more,,,,, forged- expensive but bulletproof.

I have TRW forged in mine, they are a copy of the old LS-6 pistons with a little .250" dome and I'm running 10.25:1.....yeah I need premium gas but it will haul a$$.

I'm betting they are hypertutectic since that is the big ones KB sells, they are real good for the money and should last. You can hammer on them and they will stay together. I have pulled more than one cast piston in half over the years running big blocks but I was not being kind to them.

A 350 will last OK if you treat it well but if you rawhide it that 454 will gut it. Having said that I had a friend that had a 396 in a Nova that ran high 11's on a good day but would knock down 12 flat anytime. He had a well built 350 in it and it lasted about 4 years. It was an exceptional feat but in a heavy truck I would take it easy. There's a lot of difference in a 454 versus a 396. That longer stroke makes a bunch more torque and it will kill that tranny if you are not careful. 400's are the way to go behind a big block. If the price is right it would be a good setup to buy.
