What got you hooked on trucks.

Postby Scott Johnson on Fri Sep 18, 2009 7:29 am

Just curious to see what was the main thing that got you interested in old trucks. For me, it was my Grandfather that gave me my 71 C10 step when he went to buy a new truck. Little did I know, that he was giving me a true classic. I have fond memories of him taking me fishing in the truck and letting me shift the gears on our outings (three on the tree). I learned to drive in the truck. In my younger days saturday was the highlight of my week, cause I got to drive the truck to the garbage dump. This started my passion for the 67-72 body style and old trucks in general. The truck has been in our family since 1971 and I actually went to the dealership with my Grandfather when he purchased it!!!

For me, it was also my Grandfather. I remember me and my brother sitting in the middle of that bench seat between my Pop-pop and Mom-mom getting fussed at for playing with the radio. When he died my dad got the truck, and we restored/customized it after it got hit on the side of the road while parked. I just always thought that old 68 was cool as hell.

For me it was an overpriced mechanic!!!

When I got home from Marines I bought a little red convertible. Later that lil car got a miss in one of only 4 cylinders that I couldn't figure out because I had never really tinkered on cars at that point. It cost me $300 for some mechanic to diagnose my problem as a bad sparkplug wire. This gave me that "violated" felling so I sold convertible and bought 77 chevy stepside....no computer, no fuel injection.... no a/c for that matter. I started reading up and getting mechanical knowledge from anyone that would talk to me until I was able to build my first small block for the old 77. From then on it was "REAL STEEL AND OVERKILL" for me!!

For me it was my dad. He was gear head too and always had a hot rod of some kind. He picked up a 70 chevy truck in 72 and we hot rodded it up. I learned how to drive in it. We had a hot small block in it and then stepped up to a 396 then a 425 horse 427 vette motor. I bought a 64 chevy truck in 76, I was 15 and did not have my license yet and built a 350 for it. I have been hooked since.I can't shake the addiction. That's me on the right when I was 15.....you'd think I would have at least found a shade tree and a taller A-frame.

When I was 14 my dad bought me my first car, a 1976 Cobra II mustang! Well once I got my liscense it wasnt long before the little mustang met mr tree. It never ran right after that and a neighbor down the street had a truck for sale so it was bought so I would have way back and forth to school. The truck was a 1970 Chevy lwb and an ex-state DOT truck. Ya'll remember those, bright state orange and white with the big white DOT sticker on the door. It needed work, paint, bodywork, to make it into something I wasnt embarassed to drive. Thats when I was hooked. I have had a chevy truck off and on ever since.

I got hooked driving my dads '64 SWB Fleet 230 6 cyl/3 on-the-tree. He bought it when it was 9 months old and "we" kept it until I made a big mistake and scrapped it due to rust issues. My first truck that I bought was a '76 4wd SWB Fleet...which I still miss! There have been many since then!!

When I was around 8 years old my father bought a
72 blazer. It was Okra Yellow w/ a white top. It had
maroon primer spots all over it. (Like a big ol cow)
Ever since then I have always liked the Blazers

I wanted to get my son a truck to tinker with and when he lost interest I got the bug to finish it. Been at it for most of 9 years skipped a few years because of Katrina.

Ireally wanted nothing to do with trucks growing up. I had been given an F100 and F500, but they were just for the farm stuff. When I cam back from Japan in the mid 80's I started looking at some. Almost bought a 69 C10 LWB, but the guy decided not to sell it and give it to his son. I ended up with an 86 Ranger STX. Since 86 I have only owned 2 vehicles that were not trucks, and at least for me, I'll probably never own anything but. I just like driving them and having the convenience of having that BIG trunk. ;)

My DAD. He was a diesel mechanic by day and a Chevy freak at night.I watched and worked on chevy cars and trucks before i was 15.His work trucks were 52,54,55,57,59,and 63 Chevies. He used to carry dynamite and some had huge signs on them in front and back .EXPLOSIVES.I just thought them trucks were the coolest things. He died when i was 15, so we never got to build a hot rod together, but i remembered enough to get started. He would of loved them small block 400s .

Really cool to hear all the stories. Nice pic Mike, I wish I had some pics of my grandfather and me with the old truck. I`ll have to do a little digging and see if I can find some.

In high school my first truck was a 69 Chevy stepside with a 327-turbo 350. I had it all through high school and thats what hooked me.

After that:
76 chevy stepside, 350-turbo 350- 410 gears, yellow that ran high 13's.
then:
91 chevy swb to get me to and from college.
then:
84 chevy lwb 350-700r4.
then:
89 gmc jimmy that I still own
then:
72 chevy lwb
then:
69 Chevy suburban

Those are all the vehicles I have ever owned so I have been a Chevy man all the way. I can say for sure that having a company truck the past 10 years has really helped. By the way it is a chevy. :)
